Where’s Rey?

For those of you who don’t know, the recent film Star Wars: The Force Awakens has encountered some merchandising drama. The franchise has purposefully excluded a female character from their merch. Rey is a strong, smart, feisty, and thoughtful young woman. Fans are outraged she has been excluded from toys and figurine packages. And get this- she’s the main character! The whole film focuses on Rey and her male counterpart, Finn. Rey is most arguably the main character, and she has been discarded in the franchise merchandising. This great injustice has brought about the hashtag #WheresRey. People are appalled by this blatant discrimination. Large toy companies promise more Rey toys and figures in the new year. However, this event has unmasked the lingering sexism in the film industry.
