The Battle of the Seasons

The battle between Spring and Summer has begun causing wild storms to appear in our midst. We all know that Summer will win in the end, for it is already creeping upon us. The temperature is going up, thus more people are trying to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays. The rain pours down as a sign that Spring desperately struggles to persevere against Summer.

But Summer has global warming on its side. People have made a terrible mistake by starting global warming, for now they are powerless to stop it. One day, Spring is bravely holding off Summer with its rain and cherry blossoms—but Summer takes Spring out with a powerful burst from its ally, the Sun.

Spring does not give up. It tries to shock Summer with a lightning bolt, but it is too late. Spring was down too long. Summer had come, causing Spring’s close friend Fall to surrender down in the Southern Hemisphere.

The battle has ended, so sit down, relax, and say hello to Summer!

Rainy Day

Rainy days aren’t always fun, but there are lots of things you can do inside to entertain yourself.

Have you ever made a cake? It might just be the perfect indoor activity for you. Cakes taste strong, rich, and fluffy. You and a parent can make a cake that is delicious!

For some people, it’s fun to sit inside and read. A good book can always take you on a trip through your imagination.

It is also fun to do a puzzle. Doing a puzzle is very exciting when you hear the last piece “Click!”

Do you like going to the movies? Well you might be able to make yourself an indoor movie theater. First, look in your kitchen and find some popcorn and candy. Then your whole family can snuggle down in blankets, and have your own movie marathon!

When you wake up and hear that “Pitter patter” on your window, you know that a whole day of indoor fun awaits!

Mississippi in Danger

Splash! I heard a sound like thunder. Suddenly, water leaked through the door. It crashed and thrashed all over my floor as I scrambled to get dressed. I pulled my glasses from my night stand and hurried to my closet. I threw on my plaid skirt and zipped up my coat. I rushed out of the orphanage.

The Mississippi River was flooding like crazy. Everywhere people were running for their lives. The pouring down rain masked my tears. My friends and I followed the orphanage leader. The water was up to my knees. We hurtled through the airport and onto a plane. I sat by a window and watched, powerless, as the amazing state of Mississippi disappeared under the thrashing waves of its own river.

Tiki’s Sweet Surprise

BAM!

Tiki fell out of her tree. She was a koala in Australia. Tiki is small, cute, and friendly. She loves sweets. Candy, cake, brownies, muffins, cookies, cupcakes . . . she loves it all. Every day, Tiki takes a cab to Sydney and walks to the bakery. When she gets there, Tiki crawls into the kitchen and takes some sweets.

One hot Sunday afternoon, Tiki was in the bakery kitchen and she saw a wonderful sight. High up on the table she saw a seven-layer, butter cream frosting, cream filled, dark chocolate cake with candy flowers on it. Tiki just knew she had to taste some. She dropped the pile of cookies she was holding and began to climb up the tall table. When she reached the top, Tiki looked up at the enormous cake. It looked so good. Tiki reached both paws into the cake and she stuck her head in the bottom layer.

Mmmmm, it tasted delicious! The rich frosting, the cream filling . . . it was amazing. Tiki pulled her head out of the cake and licked her lips. It tasted so good. Her gaze shifted longingly to the top layer which had many chocolate covered strawberries on it.

She was about to start climbing up the cake when she heard a loud voice coming her way. Terrified, Tiki hid herself in the only thing near her — the cake. Tiki heard footsteps entering the room. She hoped that whoever was out there would not find the large and messy hold in the splendid cake. Tiki heard humming and the sound of a broom sweeping the kitchen floor. After a while, the humming stopped and the heavy footsteps disappeared out of the kitchen. Tiki pulled herself up and out through the hole. She was very messy. She had had enough sweets for the day and decided to head home.

When Tiki looked out of the kitchen she saw it was dark. Tiki froze out of fear. After a few seconds she scampered toward the door. She climbed up the window to the door knob and pulled. It wouldn’t open. Tiki tugged and pushed and kicked but the door would not budge. She climbed back down to the floor and looked up at the moon. She was frightened. Tiki had never slept away from home before. Silent tears fell from her eyes. She made herself comfortable in a big box of cotton candy. Slowly, Tiki closed her eyes, relaxed, and fell asleep.

The next morning, Tiki woke with a start. She had heard a key snap in the door. Tiki ducked under the cotton candy just in time. The door opened and closed as footsteps faded into the kitchen. Tiki dashed out the door and ran all the way home. She never ate cake again . . . mostly.

The Volcano

Boom! The volcano exploded with fire. I heard a bloodcurdling scream, and I was shaken awake by my father. He told me to get dressed. I tore off my pajamas and yanked on my red shirt. I threw on some jeans and stuffed my sneakers onto my feet. I zipped up my black jacket and hurtled out the door.

Mt. Saint Helens had exploded at last. My father and I were not the only ones running away. People were fleeing everywhere. I expected us to take a plane, but my father lead me right past the airport to the train station. This place had less people. We rushed aboard just as the train pulled away. I slumped into a seat next to a window and looked out as the wonderful state of Washington faded, under deep seas of lava, before my very eyes.

The Four Little Girls

This is a story that I wrote in kindergarten. I want to put this story up because it’s a little bit cute to have something from when I was 6. I hope you enjoy this story. (My mom says it’s a bit strange, but I like it.)

Once there was a little girl who had no faith in herself.  She waits and waits for something to happen to her, but it never happens.

Then, she says, “I don’t like living in this place.  I live in Oceanland.  It’s just so lonely.  There are farms outside of it.  There’s a duck pond.  Everything looks so fun.  But . . . but, I’m lonely.”

Then one day, a girl named Chloe says to her friends, “Come on, guys, look at this little girl.  She needs a friend.”  (Chloe says that because she’s a very good friend.)

Chloe goes over to the little girl and says, “What’s your name?  I’m Chloe!”  (And, she pointed her thumb at herself.)

And, the little girl says shyly, “Martha.”

Chloe says, “These are my friends, Jane and Emily.”

“Hi,” says Jane.

“Guys, I think she is a little shy,” says Emily.

Then, Chloe whispers to her friends, “Well, I guess we could ask her if she knows how to read and write.”

“That’s a good idea,” says Jane.  She has a bag and a little purse.  Inside of the bag is school books (a coloring book, a math book, and a book that they can read).  In her little purse, she has a pencil case, three boxes of crayons, five sticks of glue, two things of tape, and 15 pieces of paper.  (Jane has all this stuff because she is rich.)

The Titanic

On Saturday 100 years ago the Titanic hit an iceberg that made the grand ship’s first journey her last.

Fourteen years before the Titanic, an author named Morgan Robertson wrote a book called the Titan. The Titanic was almost an exact replica of the Titan. In this author’s book, the Titan crashed in to an iceberg and sunk. It was a creepy prophecy for what would happen to the Titanic 14 years later. The Titan gave builders and engineers an idea to build the Titanic… and that’s where it all started.

The Titanic was the biggest ship known to man. Her three anchors weighed 31 tons! Each of the huge funnels on Titanic was big enough to drive two trains through. The Titanic had nine decks making it 11 stories tall. The Titanic was an enormous ship!

The Titanic hit the iceberg at around 11:40 pm, April 14, 1912. The great ship sank at about 2:20 am. Only six people out of 1,500 were saved from the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Seven hundred people were saved in boats. One of the survivors was Rosa Abbot. Rosa had two sons and both of them died in the crash. The three Abbots had jumped into the water, but only Rosa came up.

The Titanic was not the only historical event on April 14, 1912.  The same night that the Titanic sank, a young woman named Harriet Quimby was the first female pilot to fly across the English Channel. Harriet Quimby used to be a reporter but she left her normal city job to follow her dreams of becoming a pilot.

The Titanic was a horrible loss but a very intriguing topic that I hope more people take an interest to.

The Eggs’ Point of View

Yesterday I went to a really fun party called Eggstravaganza! I decided to write some Good News/Bad News stories about this super fun party. I hope you like them!

The Dyed Egg

  • Fortunately, the super-awesome Mrs. R. bought me at the store with my 11 brothers and sisters.
  • Unfortunately, a little boy with blue eyes and blonde hair dyed me.
  • Fortunately, he dyed me lots of pretty colors, like red, blue, and orange.
  • Unfortunately, he chucked me into a hard cup.
  • Fortunately, I got to sit back and watch the plastic eggs do the egg hunt.
    But that’s another story . . .

The Plastic Egg

  • Fortunately, I was chosen to be in a cool, backyard egg hunt.
  • Unfortunately, I got thrown into a white bucket covered in butterflies.
  • Fortunately, I had yummy candy inside me.
  • Unfortunately, the short, little girl with brown hair took the candy.
  • Fortunately, she put me into a large pile with all my friends.
  • Unfortunately, then I was put away.
  • Fortunately, I can come back out next year!

The Tossed Egg

  • Fortunately, I got picked to be in an egg toss.
  • Unfortunately, I was super scared that I would break.
  • Fortunately, the ladies tossing me won the egg toss!
  • Unfortunately, they wanted to see how much longer they could go without dropping me.
  • Fortunately, they caught me twice in a row without dropping me.
  • Unfortunately, Mrs. M threw me way too high, and I hit a power line. Then, I broke on the street
  • Fortunately, Kiley took a picture of me, and I think I look fabulous!
         Don’t I look eggcellent?

Thank you so much, Mr. and Mrs. R. The party was great!

Fireworks

It is July 4. I smell the smoke of the hot dogs grilling. I hear the blazing booms of fireworks and the whistling of the wind. The leaves on trees rustle and I taste rich, cold, creamy ice cream in my mouth. I see salad, fruit kabobs, chicken legs, mashed potatoes, hot dogs, and hamburgers covering the table. Little insects crawl on my toes making me giggle and squeal.
Pitter, patter, pitter, patter is the sound of raindrops tinkling in song. Lightning strikes. I scream and laugh. We look up at a thousand stars and felt the warm, wet rain on our necks.
It’s time for bed. Goodnight stars, goodnight moon. Goodnight to the world as it whispers—
              See you soon . . .

I Am Stuck

By Kiley (3rd grade)

I am stuck. In a pit of mud. If you want to find out how I got here… well it’s a long story. If you want to find out who I am, you’re out of luck. My identity is a secret. I don’t know why, but I can’t tell you who I am. You’ll have to imagine me. Maybe I look like Jack Black… and maybe I look like your great uncle Bob. Either way I am stuck in a pit of mud, because a monkey ate my shoe.

It all started in the jungle where I was studying lizards for a week. I was eating French toast, you see, and a monkey grabbed my shoe off my foot. I decided to chase after it. You would think this is when I got stuck but you’re wrong. That stupid monkey left a banana peel out on the field so I slipped. Then I was upside down on my back before I could say “Ouch.” Well, apparently the monkey thought this was hilarious. He was howling and pounding his fists…gosh I hate that monkey.

Anyway, then I reached up and tried to snatch back my shoe but he was already running away. I pushed myself up (my back bone now cracked) and kept on running.

Here’s where I got stuck. I was chasing the darn monkey and I tripped over a tree root. Then the monkey opened his mouth and took a huge bite out of my slipper. Well that made me both angry and disgusted. I stared at him with great loathing for a while and then tried to get up. I was stuck. In mud. And you know what that monkey did? The little brat stuck his tongue out at me! Then of course he had to go running back to the jungle to tell all his little friends that he swallowed my footwear.

Then I got mauled. Yep…Mauled. I was just sitting in that pit of mud when this white tiger came out of the trees. It growled and prowled in a circle around me, then stopped. Then and there I knew trouble had arrived. The tiger pounced… on me!!! He opened his mouth to show me large, sharp teeth. I screamed and… well let’s just say that he had a good lunch. Yeah… my studying ended there.
