Sticks and Stones

You know the saying
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But words will never hurt me.
It’s not true. Because words hurt.
Words stay.
Words haunt us.
Sticks and stones will break my bones,
But words will hurt me more.

You know the saying
Fall down seven times,
Stand up eight.
It’s true. Because strength works.
Strength makes you brave.
Strength gives you hope.
Fall down seven times, stand up eight,
And you have already won.

You know the saying
Failure is the mother
Of success.
It’s funny. Because half the time I think that’s true.
Sometimes I don’t.
And that’s not good.
Failure is the mother of success,
As long as you believe it is.

Alphabetical

I’m the kid who organizes the dugout when I’m not playing.
I’m the kid who makes all the beds at the sleepover.
I’m the kid who organizes my bookshelf in alphabetical order by last name of the author.

Sometimes I get made fun of.
Sometimes I get laughed at.
Sometimes my feelings get hurt.

I still clean the dugout when I’m not playing.
I still make all the beds at the sleepover.
I still organize my bookshelf in alphabetical order by last name of the author.

I Can Write Anywhere

I can write sitting on a tree branch
I can write on an airplane in the sky
I can write under a weeping willow
I can write anywhere

I can write next to a marching band
I can write buried in a pile of blankets
I can write at a baseball game
I can write anywhere

Any place
Any time
Any distractions there may be…
I can write anywhere

Alone

I am alone.
I was abandoned.
My only company is the ocean.

I spend my days doing nothing
except wondering about tomorrow.

Then it came.
A ship.
I was saved.
I was free.

The Moon’s Travels, a parallel poem to The Sun’s Travels

The Moon is not asleep when I,
Open up my sleepy eyes
He travels the Earth again, and again
And night after night I see my friend

While here at home in the mystical night,
We’re snuggled up with our eyes closed tight
Each little German wakes as one
And looks forward to a day of fun

And when I get up out of bed
I know somewhere in the back of my head
That all the children in the East
Are finishing up their evening feasts

After Jill Tumbled

You’ve all heard the story
They went up the hill
To fetch some water
Twins, Jack and Jill
But do you what happened next, do you?
Ha! I didn’t think you knew!
Well Jack broke his crown
And Jill broke her leg
But trust me, that’s not the end.
She crawled to the doctor that wonderful Jill,
Up the hill and around the bend
When she reached the market, she called to the town,
“Help! My brother has broken his crown!”
And so, doctors rushed to the hill
And young Jack owes it all to his twin sister Jill
So now you know the end of the story,
Now you know Jill, in all of her glory.

Fairy Tale Poem

Cinderella lost her shoe
And Little Bo lost her sheep
The cow jumped over the moon and cried moo
While Sleeping Beauty fell asleep

Jack fell down the hill
An Hansel was almost a pie
Humpty Dumpty wrote his will
And “WOLF!” the little boy cried

The Little Mermaid took a dive
And Tinkerbelle took a fly
I now must go and join them
I bid you all a goodbye.

How?

How does a monkey find food to eat?
And how much does an eagle weigh?
When you go to the store and by dozens of bottles
How much does the clerk make you pay?
How do you decide what to eat for lunch?
And how do climb a steep hill?
Most of these have not yet been answered,
And most of them never will.
