Beautiful blue skies
Strong green grass
Soft winter breeze
Bright warm sun
Oh the horrors upon us
This snow day

I am currently reading The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin. This book is sad and stunning. It is disgustingly heart-wrenching while still being beautiful. It is simple with many layers. This is a book about a gifted girl who’s ex-best friend drowns. However, the protagonist tried to prove that her friend was instead stung by jellyfish. The book, told through past and present, is a wonderful example of coping with a loved one’s death.
For those of you who don’t know, the recent filmĀ Star Wars: The Force Awakens has encountered some merchandising drama. The franchise has purposefully excluded a female character from their merch. Rey is a strong, smart, feisty, and thoughtful young woman. Fans are outraged she has been excluded from toys and figurine packages. And get this- she’s the main character! The whole film focuses on Rey and her male counterpart, Finn. Rey is most arguably the main character, and she has been discarded in the franchise merchandising. This great injustice has brought about the hashtag #WheresRey. People are appalled by this blatant discrimination. Large toy companies promise more Rey toys and figures in the new year. However, this event has unmasked the lingering sexism in the film industry.
Cookies and milk set out on the stool.
Reindeer food made of carrots and glitter.
Boots in the hall to be filled with sweets.
A story read by the light of our Christmas tree.
Merry Christmas Eve. Goodnight.
Now that winter break has begun
I’m ready for some holiday fun
Christmas cookies at Grammy’s house
Christmas morning quiet as a mouse
Dozens of presents stacked under the tree
Some are from me and some are for me!
Family is happy, smiles are glowing.
Lights are shining and stomachs are growing.
Fun, food, family, love.
This is what the holiday is made of.
The clock ticked slowly.
The teachers droned on.
The day dragged on.
And then,
RING!!!!
I’m free. I’m free for two glorious weeks.
Let the happiness and fun of winter break
Begin.
I may not have a wreath
Hanging upon my door
Or a tree with colored lights
Or a Hanukkah Menora
I may not have many decorations
Outside of my home
But inside it’s a party
With spirit to and fro
I am bursting with anticipation
Ready for Christmas day
I know it’s early, but nevertheless
Happy Holidays!
Books.
They introduce us to new worlds,
New concepts,
New ideas,
And new people.
I have met characters I adore
And characters I’m in love with
And characters I want to punch in the face.
I am reading a book where the main character
Is a girl.
That I .
Want.
To punch.
In the face.
The drama surrounds me
The characters enchant me
I quickly soak up
The wittiness of the lines
The show is perfect
As is the next
Show after show
I think I’m addicted
And I think I’m okay with that.
There is one thing that stands between autumn and winter. It is chilly and wet, and despises the sunshine. It comes with fog, dew, and dripping wet hair.
Rain stands guard. Rain says, “For one week you must endure me, then I will turn snowy.”
It’s going to be a cold, wet, snowy winter.
Should I cheer for no school?
Or cry for the cold?
