The Land of Stories (4) by Chris Colfer

A few days ago I finished reading the all new novel by Chris Colfer, The Land of Stories: Beyond the Kingdoms. Although I won’t give away any spoilers here, this is an incredible book.

In this story, main characters Alex and Connor travel between worlds and stories to stop an evil villain from recruiting an army of literary antagonists. Along the way they form friendships and bonds in magical worlds unlike their own. But can they stop their own world from being destroyed?

To find out what happens next, read The Land of Stories: Beyond the Kingdoms.

Knock on Glass

Prompt:
I woke up to hear knocking on glass. At first, I thought it was the window until I heard it come from the mirror again.

I woke up to the sound of knocking. Instinctively I looked to the window of my dorm, but there was no one there. Slowly, I turned my head and looked at the full length mirror across the room. I sighed with relief as I saw nothing but my own reflection. But then, my so-called reflection jumped out of bed and walked up to the mirror. I could barely catch my breath as I too rose and stood in front of the mirror. That’s when I realized my “reflection” was wearing different pajamas. And she stood in a slightly different way. I opened my mouth to scream but all that came out was a whisper, “Sophie?” The girl in the mirror nodded and smiled at me. I began to sob as I pulled my blanket tighter around myself.

Sophie was my twin sister and best friend.
Sophie died in a car crash ten years ago.

Bottled Emotions

Prompt:
You live in a world in which you can buy bottled emotions.

Shouts echo throughout the crowded streets, bouncing off brick walls and sounding like one massive explosion. Everywhere around me vendors yell out prices and and hold up objects. Finally, I find what I am searching for. I have stumbled across a booth decked in green. Behind the counter a woman smiles at me a gestures to the row of bottles lined up on the countertop. “Are you interested in buying any of these lovely products? Perfumes are half off all week!” I shake my head and pick up each bottle one by one. Each label says the same thing– “Jealousy”. Finally, I select a bottle about the size of a soda can, and hand the saleswoman a twenty dollar bill. She gives me four ones back, and I duck back into the swarm of people.

Once I am home, I set the bottle on the counter and stare at it for a few minutes. Then I remind myself, “She deserves this. She stole your place on the team.” Just then, the doorbell rings and my dog Charlie starts barking. I rush to the front door and throw it open. There, standing before me is the girl who ruined my life, Ellen Dark. Ellen’s mother Theresa Dark is the head coach of the women’s basketball team at University of New Mexico. My whole life I’ve been training to play college basketball, but I got cut. I was beat out for a spot on the team by one person– Ellen. And even though I’m better then Ellen, her mom is the coach.

Ellen smiles at me and steps over the threshold. “Hey! Nice place you have here.” I nod and smile at her. “Would you like a drink?” I ask, trying to keep my voice casual. Ellen nods and I lead her into the living room. Next door in the kitchen, I take my newly purchased bottle and pour it into a glass. It foams for a moment, then calms so that it looks like water. “Your dog is adorable!” Ellen calls from the next room. “Thanks!” I reply with a false smile. I carry my water and my revenge, and place Ellen’s glass in front of her. “Bottoms up!” I say, nervously. Ellen smiles and puts the glass to her lips…

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Anyone who knows me knows what a humongous Harry Potter fan I am. I have read these books at least five times, and know the movie lines by heart. However, I thought I’d let everyone know what is so great about these books.

In the world of Harry Potter, readers are transported to a magical and unbelievable place where anything is possible. Rowling has created a beautiful world that balances real life and fantasy. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry captures the idea of a perfect boarding school.

Now, don’t even get me started on the characters. Each character in the books, big or small, plays an important role in the story. The characters are vividly described, and are a combination of people you meet here in the “Muggle” world, and fictional witches and wizards. I personally connect with Hermione Granger, who is a strong female character that stays true to herself and her promises.

Harry Potter is a series of novels that top all others. Throughout all seven books, the world remains just as magical, the characters remain just as mystical, and the writing remains just as incredible. If anything, the books steadily improve, because you get to know the characters better as the story continues.

J.K. Rowling has probably received higher praise from much wiser people than a 12-year-old girl, but she has captured my heart with these novels, and I will cherish the world she created forever. Thank you, Ms. Rowling. You truly are my hero.

Swimming Haikus

swimming-lane-start-block-6105332

Coach says, “Time for sets.”
You groan and ask, “How many?”
“Until you pass out…”

Dry land tomorrow
*cough, cough, cough* Oh no, I’m sick
No, instead: relays

Coach says, 50 sprint
You say, 25 sprint and
25 easy?

The Storm

Lightning fills the sky.
Thunder cracks in the distance.

Wind whips at the building.

Rain cascades on the window panes.
Lights flicker.
Trees quake and quiver.
The storm is here.

Will it ever leave?

Summer

Every year, I get so excited for summer vacation to start. I’m ready for school to be over, and summer seems like the perfect break. It’s different, fun, and just plain awesome!

And yet, every year is the same! I spend my mornings at swimming, I spend my days sitting around, wondering what to do, and I always say “This year I’ll hang out with my friends every week”… And I never do.

Summer is just like a big tree. It provides shade and comfort, but soon it will not block out the heat; the truth is that summer is 80 days of boredom. It looms overhead and creates a depressing atmosphere.

But this year will not be depressing or boring. And this time I mean it. I will do everything in my power to ensure that I have a fun, relaxing summer. So for now I have to go, but have a good summer everybody.

Ecosystem Ballad

A tiny sapling
With a patch of sunlight
Its spotlight shines
It quivers in fright

Tall trees surround
The small baby tree
Who want to grow tall
As tall as the eye can see

Slowly it grows
As children sit in its shade,
And as it grows tall
Its worries begin to fade

It lives a good life
With friends all around
But one day a “CHOP”
Sends the tree to the ground

Then all around
It sees lots of streets
Buildings and cars
And people with feet

Its world now destroyed
It cried tears of sap
Knowing its tree friends
Can never grow back

With its last breath
The tree looks up at the sky
Surrounded by nature
The old oak tree dies.

The forests are dying
So if you want to breathe
The world needs more people
Who speak for the trees.

Fairytale Limericks

A young maiden once lost her shoe
From the beautiful palace she flew
The clock struck midnight
The girl ran in fright
Wearing a dress that was blue.

Three little pigs ran away
And one made a house out of hay
One out of sticks
One out of bricks
Which kept the big bad wolf away.

There was a young girl wearing red
She had a hood on her head
She trekked through the woods
With a basket of goods
To visit her Granny in bed.

Onstage: A Haiku

I sit patiently

The white hot lights burn my eyes

Music starts… Showtime.
