Snow

White fields stretch
as far as the eye can see.
Pine trees spike out
covered in milky frost.
Green shrubs
turned completely white.
Thin trees look as though
they could shatter with one touch.
Thick snowflakes fall
and land on children’s tongues.
This stuff,
this is snow.
Not the mushy, dirty, sloshy stuff.
This is snow.
This is magic.

A New Year

With a jolt of my stomach
I jump down the stairs
Hoping I’m not too late
I jump in line next to Mom
And sigh with relief
The seconds left: Twenty eight
I count with my brother,
We jump up and down
As the countdown reaches 10
And suddenly
it’s 2014
I hug my Mommy close again
My brother and I
Bounce off the walls
Trying to be the first to touch
Every nook and cranny
Of our house
But I collapse on the couch;
It’s too much!
But I was the first
In 2014
To open my door and say,
“2014!”
A new year begins,
Hip, hip, hooray!
And as I hug all the relatives
I think to myself
What do I wish for this year?
And I realize all I want to accomplish
Is spreading hope far and near.
So for your resolution,
Don’t just say
“Be kind”
Help somebody else,
And use your mind.

Christmas Eve

A big fancy dinner
Where grandparents come
And we get to open a present,
Just one
Then brand new pj’s
And an ornament
Our letters to Santa
Have been sent.
The cookies are out
For St. Nick to eat
And our Christmas tree
Looks really neat
As I stand in the sunroom
I think to myself
Six hours away
Are Santa and an elf
I make sure the advent calendars
Are up to date
Then jump into bed
Just after eight!
The sugar plums dancing
Around in my head
Make me sleepy
For I am watered and fed.
And although this Christmas
Isn’t all white
Merry Christmas to all,
And to all a good night.

An 11-Year-Old’s Night (in a Nutshell)

I reluctantly brush my teeth

I groan when I find another floss bag- I thought I wasn’t going to have to floss!

I dance around my room for 30 min.

I climb into bed and put about five blankets on- then take them off- and then put them on again

I fall asleep and dream about bunnies! (Or vicious, man-eating monsters- your choice.)

An 11-Year-Old’s Day (in a Nutshell)

Christmas is 10 days away
Half of my shopping is done
I have $30 in my pocket
The play I’m in opens Thursday
I just almost won a basketball game
Tomorrow, I’m doing Secret Santa
Life is good.

Under the Tree

There are 8 presents under the tree
And not a single one is for me!
There are 12 presents under the tree
And not a single one is for me!
There are 15 presents under the tree
And not a single one is for me!
There are 24 presents under the tree
And not a single one is for me!
There are 37 presents under the tree
And not a single one is for me!
It’s Christmas Eve,
Oh geez!
What did I do?
I bought presents for you!
There are no presents left under the tree
I guess I can’t read,
17 were for me.

My Mommy

She is the star to my tree
The snow to my plow
I try singing without her
But I don’t know how
She’s part of my duet
We’re jelly and jam
If I am the turkey,
She is the ham
I know my rhyming
is pretty bad
But I hope this last line
Makes you glad:
Love left with you
And love will come back with you
And love will wait here for you
All the hours in between.

Look

Look.
The world seems flat though it is round.
Look.
Most dogs you see weren’t bought at the pound.
Look.
Some people are evil, no matter how nice they seem.
Look.
There is truth in everything, even a dream.
Look.
Life is hard, but a story of. . .
Look.
… hard work, happiness, and true love.

A Shattered Wall

Sometimes, I feel like my temper and I are standing on opposite sides of a glass wall. Every time I get annoyed, my temper punches the wall, and it cracks. A tiny crack, but enough to make it easier next time I get frustrated. Sometimes, after a lot of punching, the wall shatters. I can’t prevent the wall from shattering, but I can pick up the pieces and build a new one.

Let it Go

Sometimes it’s hard to keep it in
Sometimes it’s hard to be a good girl
Sometimes it’s hard to look the part
Sometimes it’s hard to hide my feelings
Sometimes it’s hard to make decisions
Sometimes it’s hard to stand up to people
Sometimes it’s hard to do what I believe in
Sometimes it’s hard to control my temper
Sometimes I have to let it go
